Mauritius is a Popular Holiday Destination

Mauritius is a popular holiday destination that appeals to honeymooners, families with children and retired couples. It is a small island off the east coast of Africa. The island has an approximate population of 1.3 million people, the majority of which are of Hindu origin. The most widely used languages are Creole, French and English. You will find that Mauritians have a very friendly disposition and have a kind and gently nature about them.

The capitol of Mauritius is Port Louis, situated on the North West side of the country, but there are many popular resorts surrounding the whole island. A common saying in Mauritius is ‘West is Best’, meaning that the weather conditions are better and less windy on this side of the island. This should not deter people from staying at other areas on the island since Mauritius as a whole experiences favourable weather conditions throughout the year. The warmest season is between December and April where temperatures average around 30 degrees Celsius. The winter season is still very moderate and temperatures rarely reach below 25 degrees Celsius.

The currency in Mauritius is the Mauritian Rupee but credit cards such as visa and master cards are widely accepted. There are many places like local markets in town or shopping centres where you can buy unique and attractive souvenirs, traditional arts and crafts.

The island is famous for its white sandy beaches with sparkling clear ocean water, making it ideal for beach lovers who enjoy snorkelling or even fishing. Water sports are very popular and many resorts offer free non-motorized sports as well as water-skiing and scuba diving facilities.

There are various types of accommodation options available on the island ranging from self-catering units to fully inclusive five star hotels that cater to your every need, providing entertainment and offering great service. Alternatively you can opt for a more rustic type of holiday and rent a self-catering villa. It is worth considering a fully inclusive hotel option as this can often work out cheaper as food and drinks are quite expensive.
